Overview
How many of us love the drums? Love feeling the beat? Has air drummed to your favorite song? Scotia Music Academy offers the best Percussion lessons in the Capital District through lessons custom fit to each student’s needs. Our percussion faculty teach various styles including rock, blues, jazz, and more. Students starting out will learn about the drum kit and its components, mallet percussion, rhythmic patterns, and counting. More advanced students continue to progress with a wide variety of rudiment exercises designed to improve skills and comfort. All percussionists are encouraged to bring their favorite drum parts to learn in their lesson. All of our lessons, including those on the drums and mallet percussion, include instruction on music theory, notation, and rhythm while students explore the many styles of music while having fun in their lessons!
Just starting out? Follow these simple instructions!
You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons (though owning one at home will greatly benefit your lessons). Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring anything except their drum sticks and a notebook.
Beginning students can learn with a drum pad and sticks for about $40. And we sell them at the studio! Choose a rubber or plastic practice pad. A plastic pad has a more natural response but makes more sound.
AFRAID of the NOISE? You can purchase an electronic set and use headphones!
Here are a few affordable ways you can keep sound levels down while you practice:
1. Start on a rubber practice pad
2. Put rubber pads on cheap drums
3. Purchase an electronic drum kit
What’s the #1 reason to choose Scotia Music Academy for drum lessons?
Our drum instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student’s favorite type of music. Whether you’re playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the drums after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.
What styles of drumming do you teach?
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, worship, blues, and classical. We combine the important fundamentals with the music YOU want to play. With multiple teachers at the Scotia Music Academy, you are sure to find we are the best match for YOU.
How qualified are your drum instructors?
Our percussion instructors are highly qualified, all have teaching experience, and most importantly, they have a passion for teaching. Being a musician doesn’t automatically make you a teacher–that’s why we search for those who are best qualified for mentoring our music students!
We search the entire area for the top teachers, who embody the high values at Scotia Music Academy. Most importantly, our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student’s learning style. Many of our instructors have gone on performance tours of the USA and Europe and have years of professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to their teaching abilities, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parent or caregiver on a personal level. We search high and low for the BEST teachers, so you don’t have to!
What will I learn from drum lessons at Scotia Music Academy?
Our teachers understand that every student is an individual, with personal musical needs and goals. We make it a priority to tailor how we teach and what we teach to your individual needs.
If you enroll here for percussion lessons, your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child. Together, you will develop a plan to achieve your goals! We love beginners, so even if you don’t know where to begin, we can help!
How long does it take to learn to play drums?
There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn to play. With regular practice, a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long-term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
I don't have any musical background or ability. Can I still help my child practice drums?
Yes! Even if you don’t have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress. Parents will occasionally sit in on their child’s music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound or how the student should be positioning their hands. We also send lesson notes weekly and sometimes create videos to help in the most effective way possible.
